The referee course is an ongoing, continual learning one. SAUK members can register as an SAUK referee any time after they become 1st dan. They can register from this website by paying a one-off fee of £50.00 into the account below:
HSBC sort code 40-41-07, account number 32013894
They should put a reference for the payment of “ref” and add their surname and T shirt size.
For example: refAllbrightM
When SAUK receives the payment, a referee T shirt will be ordered in your size, with your surname embroidered on the sleeve.
When an applicant attends the next referee course he/she will receive the T shirt, a referee passbook and a referee manual.
Referees are graded on experience and knowledge. There is a theory test and a practical test for each component of the referee course.
The course is divided into 12 levels. 6 for judging embu and 6 for refereeing shiai as follows:
The three levels relate to the level of competition:
1. club shodohai and regional events
2. SAUK National events – SAUK club event, SAUK individual event, SAUK/BAA Open (see events calendar)
3. International events
Everyone wears the same T shirt but the association is printed on the back, in our case SAUK, and levels are denoted by pips worn on the collar.
Applicants may opt to officiate only in embu events or only in shiai events, or both, according to their level.
There are two referee courses each year. (see events calendar)
All refereeing experience should be written into the referee passbook as evidence. The referee manual explains the experience and knowledge required for each level.
